Phillip Hornthal is a native of Elizabeth City, N.C. and alum of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Campbell University. He was an editor for the Campbell Law Review, as well as a contributing writer. He served as a Research Assistant to a N.C. Supreme Court justice, as well as holding memberships in the Defense Research Institute and the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys.

Mr. Hornthal was admitted to bar in North Carolina and the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of North Carolina in 1993, as well as the U.S. Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit in 2000.  Mr. Hornthal is also certified as a Superior Court Mediator by the NC Dispute Resolution Commission.

He is a member of Christ Episcopal Church, where he has served on the Vestry and as its Senior Warden, teaches Sunday School and sponsors the Acolytes; and has served as both a member and President of the Elizabeth City Rotary Club, has served as President of the Elizabeth City Boys and Girls Club; and as President of Arts of the Albemarle and Co-Chair of its successful $3.2 million dollar fundraising campaign to renovate and build The Center.   He and his wife Kristy have three children: L.P, Ellie, and James.
