 HORNTHAL, RILEY, ELLIS & MALAND, LLP, is pleased to announce the addition of two attorneys. 


After clerking for the firm in 2016, Casey L. Peaden and William P. Norrell joined the law firm as Associates in September 2017. On October 3, 2017, Ms. Peaden was sworn in as a member of the North Carolina State Bar by Honorable Cheri L. Beasley, Associate Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. On October 10, 2017, Mr. Norrell was sworn in as a member of the North Carolina State Bar by the Honorable J. Carlton Cole, Resident Superior Court Judge. Both Peaden and Norrell were admitted to practice before the United State District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina on October 10, 2017 by the Honorable Terrence W. Boyle, U.S. District Court Judge. 

Ms. Peaden is a 2014 graduate of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, where she majored in Political Science and Sociology. She graduated magna cum laude from Campbell University School of Law in 2017.

Ms. Peaden attended Campbell School of Law as the inaugural recipient of the full-tuition Public Service Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded in recognition of a demonstrated commitment to public service. Upon graduation, the North Carolina Bar Association also recognized Ms. Peaden for her Pro Bono service. 

While in law school, Ms. Peaden served as Executive Editor of the Law Review as well as a Teaching Scholar for First Year Students. She also participated in the school's advocacy program, completing in both Moot Court and Mock Trail competitions across the country. She and her teammates were twice named National Champions and earned three Second Place titles. 

Ms. Peaden's internship experiences included the North Carolina Supreme Court, the Durham County Attorney's Office for the Department of Social Services and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina. As an associate for Hornthal, Riley, Ellis & Maland, LLP, Ms. Peaden will practice primarily out of the Elizabeth City office. Her practice will focus on matters involving insurance defense, commercial and general litigation. 


Prior to entering law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Mr. Norrell graduated from the College of the Albemarle. While at COA, he was a member of the baseball team and obtained a North Carolina Real Estate License. Mr. Norrell then completed his undergraduate education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 2014. He was a member of the UNC baseball program, serving as a bullpen catcher and student manager. 

During law school, Mr. Norrell received the William R. Kenan, Jr. Merit Scholarship and the J. Russell Kirby Public Service Scholarship. He was also named IL Pro Bono Student of the Year following his first year of law school. 

As an associate attorney for Hornthal, Riley, Ellis & Maland, LLP, Mr. Norrell will practice primarily out of the Firm's Elizabeth City office, focusing on Real Estate, Business, Estate Planning, Education and Local Government/Municipal Law.
