ELIZABETH CITY – In recognition of his volunteer service and community leadership, the North Carolina Bar Association recognized Donald C. Prentiss with its Citizen Lawyer Award at the Bar Association’s Annual Awards Banquet on June 21, 2018 in Wilmington, N.C. This award honors attorneys who not only dedicate their time and talents to serving their communities, but also inspire others to do the same.

After obtaining his undergraduate and law degrees from Wake Forest University, the “double deac” and Middletown, New York native settled in Elizabeth City, North Carolina in 1985 with his wife, Heidi. Since then, Prentiss has practiced law with the firm of Hornthal, Riley, Ellis & Maland and distinguished himself as a gifted trial lawyer and leader in Northeastern North Carolina.  His service includes membership on the Albemarle Economic Development Commission, the Board of Directors of the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Directors of the Elizabeth City United Way, the Board of Directors of the Elizabeth City Boys and Girls Club, and the Board of Directors (Chair) of the Food Bank of the Albemarle.  Prentiss is also a member of Christ Episcopal Church and the Elizabeth City Morning Rotary Club.

In addition to his community service, Prentiss has served on the Board of Legal Services of North Carolina and the Board of the Client Security Fund.  Locally, Prentiss has served as President of the First Judicial District Bar and the First Judicial District Councilor to the North Carolina State Bar. He is a member of the North Carolina and American Bar Associations, as well as the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys.  Presently, Prentiss serves as the Vice Chair of the North Carolina State Bar Disciplinary Hearing Commission.

Prentiss is recognized as a lawyer who takes his professional responsibilities seriously, both in and out of the courtroom. His devotion to community service, community leadership, and public interest legal services provides a wonderful example and model for others.  For successfully balancing his countless commitments in the community and legal profession, the North Carolina Bar Association recognized Donald C. Prentiss as a 2018 recipient of the Citizen Lawyer Award.
